In this article I want to give a critical account of the direction social movements have taken in the last three decades and of the problems they pose, with their specific contents and methods of aggregation, for contemporary political systems. * In doing so, I will draw on the discussion that has engaged social movement theorists in recent years as well as on my own research. The European perspective (inspired by authors such as Touraine, Habermas, Pizzorno, Alberoni) has contributed substantially to the changing field of social movements research and I will try to summarize the consequences of this legacy in the form of a few basic questions. These questions, in turn, raise other queries and research possibilities towards which the attention of those working in the field is being focused. (1) Does Collective Action have a Subject?
